Long Emo Hair

Long emo hair
Long hair needs to be really well cut, with lots of sharp, funky layers to create definition and stop the hair from looking out of condition and lank. It can be too damaging for long hair to keep dying it different colours, so it might be a good idea just to dye it the basic black, and then use temporary clip-in hair extensions for splashes of colour. Also if you have very thick hair then layers can help smooth out the overall shape and stop it from looking too bushy. If you want to create more volume in a longer style, you can spray the top back layers of your cut with a good holding hairspray, and then gently backcomb with a brush. Keep the longer bottom layers and the fringe straight to maintain that look of well groomed sleekness.

Mid-length Emo Hair

Mid-length emo hair
Mid length emo hair is great for showing off those really choppy sharp styles, so get your layers razor cut and use straightening irons and hair serum to make the finish really modern and sleek. You can also have fun with colours, such as streaks or even clip-in extensions, which come in a range of funky bright dyes. Experiment with accessorises as well, but remember that Emo styles are rarely 'up dos', and the shape of the hair comes from the cut and textures, rather than styling the hair into standard pony tails, plaits, French twists etc.
(See example of Trace Cyrus below.)

Short Emo Hair

Short Emo Hair
Shorter Emo hair styles are all about shape and a good guideline to a basic cut is short and snappy at the back, and longer and sharply razored-in at the front. A simple style to create is to rub a little styling wax into your hair with your fingers and then mist over with hairspray. Then use straightening irons all over to finish off with a smooth, glossy look. The fringe and front sections of the hair are normally left to fall sleekly across the face, or you might want to clip them back with some funky hair grips. Short emo hair is also excellent for recreating spiky styles, and to get those really well groomed, sleek spikes straighten the hair first, and then use a little hair wax to sculpt the spikes upwards.
(See example below.)

(This is a picture of my hair, I know it's crappy but I got bored and realized I sort of have the same hair that I'm describing.)

More on Emo Hair

Emo hair styles encourage people to experiment with the shape of their hair from the cut right through to the accessories, and can be a fun way to individualise your personal look. Clips, grips and hair bands can be used to accentuate and create various shapes, and colour can be added in blocks or streaks to create volume and texture. Emo hairstyles can be any length, and can easily be created at home, although it might be a good idea to get the basic cut done by a professional to get those really sharp, razored-in layers. There are no particular rules when it comes to cutting the hair for Emo styles, just get inventive with choppy layers and fringes, but whatever length you have these styles are normally longer at the front to cover and frame the face.

Emo Wordrobe

Wordrobe
Choose the perfect clothes. Clothes are extremely important, and will help form the basics of your look, define your own style and change your look. Although every person is unique and has their own taste, there are some basics to perfecting the Emo wardrobe. Follow these instructions and you get there:

  1. Choose black or navy coloured skinny jeans to wear(you can have different colors if you like even though this would most likely result in you looking like a rainbow) - skinny jeans are optional, there are also baggy jeaned emos out there (those would be more skater though.) They look great when they are ripped and combined with a (usually silver and black) studded belt. You can also try chains hooked onto your belt, badges, or patches.

  2. A dark coloured zip-hoodie is a classic must have. Try black, or dark purple. Stripes also work very well; red and black, purple and black and so on. This hoodie and the skinny jeans form the basics of your wardrobe.
  3. Wear band t-shirts. These are great for comfortable everyday wear. Find lots of bright colored t-shirts. They can have cartoon characters on them, or they can just have an interesting print - the important thing is that you are comfortable being seen in it. Wear the classic 'shirt and tie'. Find yourself a white shirt with a collar, and wear a black or red tie with it. This also looks good with a black shirt and red tie. Get some proper shoes. Converse, Vans, and DCs are common, but pumps and Doc Martins are also acceptable. Try writing or drawing on your Converse to add a personal touch.

Arm bands, chokers, wrist bands and piercings all help define your own personal style and add to the Emo look.
Remember that Emo is more about the music than the clothes.
People think that Emos have to wear dark colors. There are other colors to wear. Many wear bright, neon colors, such as hot pink, bright green, and bright yellow.
It's a good to get an idea about the Emo culture, since you are trying to immerse yourself into the scene. Falling into sterotypes will only make people hate you; ignorant posers are never popular. So don't just dress Emo if you don't know anything about it, or you will definitely be called a poser.
Don't become the generic "I hate life", "I'm so depressed", "I cut myself" or "I want to die" Emo kid. If you feel this way you should consult a doctor. Emo is not about being depressed.

JEWELRY/ACCESSORIES

  1. Short chains with crosses or skulls are great for the boys/girls. Only for girls, small choker style beads are always cute.

  2. Small funky colored wrist bands with a small, random insignia on them are great.

  3. Spikes are okay as well (but again, more Goth).

  4. If you're a girl, wearing different types of earrings is funky.

  5. Again, if you're a girl, little girl clips in the hair is always a yes (cute).

  6. Arm warmers are cute for both, boys and girls.

  7. Horn-rimmed glasses : If you don't need glasses don't wear them, you'll look and feel really stupid and be blind.

Go thrift shopping!

Thrift shopping (charity shops)is so, so cool for an emo; your look is completely unique, nobody else will have the same stuff, and you avoid that poseurish mall-bought look. Some things to look out for:

  1. Vintage t-shirts

  2. Lots of plain tops (long or short sleeves) for layering

  3. Skinny jeans - these are harder to come by on a budget as unfortunately jeans are one of those things where you get what you pay for, but if you hunt around you might find a decent pair that someone's thrown out. They'll be slightly worn too, which is always good.

  4. Alternatively, you CAN buy skinny jeans cheap at chain stores. Actually, never be afraid to go into chain stores for anything. Just because they cater to the mainstream doesn't mean you can't find some great stuff there, and it tends to be cheaper than specialist stores. As long as you don't deck out in all the latest fashions, it should be fine.

  5. Scarves, cute stripy socks, children's hairclips, safety pins, wristbands, fingerless gloves - these are all things that can be found very cheaply and are definitely emo.

  6. Get some shoes...they aren't so cheap. There are some staples that just can't be bought cheap, so save up for a pair of converse sneakers, a cool band hoodie and perhaps a pair of good-quality jeans. If you get the bulk of your wardrobe cheap then you can afford to invest in a couple of dearer items.

Emo Eyeliner

Eyeliner
Apply cover, blush, or powder first as these products not only make application of eyeliner easier but also help it to stay.
Draw a line on your upper lids, from the center to the outer portion, narrow to wider.
Finally draw a line on the lower lids using the same technique above.
emo,me,emo me
(This is how I do mine)
Take your eye paint or eyeliner and apply it carefully on the bottom of your eyes. Make sure you get close to the lash line. Start on the inside corner of your eye and make a thin line going to the outside of your eye. Then add more black over the top, keep adding black till you cannot see anything more! This gives it a dark emo effect.
Apply your eye paint/eyeliner in the same manner on top. Try for a rounded edge on the outside corner of your eye.
Apply a healthy amount of eye shadow to your eyelids after the eyeliner has dried.
Apply two coats of black mascara.
Use foundation in a tone slightly lighter than your skin tone, or your own skin tone.
Put a tiny bit of lipstick on. Blend it well into your lips and blot some off for a tinting effect. Or you can just smooth on some foundation along with powder to add that pale lip effect.

Do your make up as bold as possible. Applying a striking amount of eye-liner is standard in the Emo scene. Do not apply this kind of make up to go to work, or if you're school does not allow such things, or you'll find yourself in trouble. If there's a potential for smudging, then try using eye pencil instead of liquid eyeliner.
The Emo look usually includes being as pale as your natural skin tone will allow. Keep your skin pale and use suncreen to make sure you don't end up with an ultra tanned, sun kissed look which will take you very far from looking Emo. Also, the clearer and paler the skin, the more striking your makeup will look. You can also get a whitening foundation. This isn't extremely important so don't go overboard with this - you don't want to look like a clown.
Dark nail polish is recommended. Black is normal, but other colors such as dark green, dark purple, or even black and white stripes could work. Make sure your nail polish doesn't chip or wear out, or it'll start to look cheap. But also bright colors will work, whatever you feel like doing at the time.
pink nails,emo
Quick note: If you have a very light skin complexion and maybe even darker eyes, you may want to use like a dark brown (close to black) and/ or a crimson color. This will not be to harsh on your skin tone!

Emo Style

Personality
Emo is an abbreviation for "emotional". Emo hairstyles convey the mentality and emotions of the person flaunting them along with their individuality and the way they think.
Hair
Emo haircuts are usually spiky and shaggy a definition of how you felt at that time. It's an all over the place crazy style so use gel and hair glue to your advantage. Adding hair glue to the bangs in the front to make them straight and stiff is a must when trying to create the emo hairstyle. You can add gel to the back of your hair as well to make it stand out if you have the back shorter. If the back is long and shaggy just mix and match gel and hair glue to make it a crazy bold effect. Uneven pieces framing the face. Black color with crazy highlights. Choppy all over the place crazy haircut. Unnatural uneven look to give it more spunk.
This is a great example below.

Straighten your hair
For a longer lasting sleek hair, go for rebonding. Or you may simply iron your hair, though it is not advisable to do so often as it can lead to dryness and damage. If you have naturally straight hair, good for you, as you can simply skip this step.
Examine your facial features carefully and determine which feature you wish to emphasize, to enhance, or to downplay.
Create distinct layers by dividing your hair into sections and cutting them into layered lengths. If you want to have indistinguishable layers, simply cut portions of hair downwards for that sleek uneven cut.
Keep your emo hair smooth and sleek by cleaning and trimming it regularly.
Since emo is just expressing yourself you don't really NEED to have jet black hair, but it helps to get that sleek look.
The Emo style does not need any professional hair stylist; you can obtain by using the scissors of your kindergarten brother or even a pair of shears instead of scissors order to cut hair. Do not worry about the uneven hair you get in return, the much asymmetrical the more better. A large number of Emo styles attributes a patch of triangular hair all around the face or the lopsided hair or some fringes covering on eye.
You can go for a classic short bob, with or without bangs that cover one eye; dye it black, dark brown, or platinum blond. It looks especially good when the back is teased up with hair gel. Pink/black/baby blue/neon green layered hair for girls is becoming popular. The top layer is usually cut short and is made to stick out - spiked, in a sense. You can even teaase your hair. Think outside the box. Emo has its roots in the punk scene, and isn't just limited to black. Hair can be dark brown, black, blond, or any color you want as long as the cut is expressive of a punk rock culture and has a little Emo flare.
Accesories can vamp up a look. Little bows have become extremely popular, as have large clips or even ribbons. Play it up and create your own unique style. Remember that there are no rules to looking and being Emo - you can do whatever you want.
emo
Grow your hair out in the front and side parts so they cover a good portion of your face. Some people grow out the back. If it's short in the back, you can spike it up with gel, but this looks tacky if it gets too long. Layer your hair. Get long layers about half way down your hair, and short the rest of the way up. (If you're a guy don't worry about layering your hair, unless you want to.) Straighten your hair, with either an iron or gel. If your hair is wavy, just use hairspray/gel to weigh it down. Or, you can use what are known as 'emo weights.' Not being the actual name, these clips come in difference sizes and different types for different purposes, but actual go under a layer of your hair to weight it down. New types exist that do things such as hold it up, or spiral it. Dye your hair black and maybe add some red or blonde streaks. Flip your hair upside down and blow-dry it. It doesn't matter if it is dry already, the heat just accentuates the layers in your hair. Accessorize your hair, once you're happy with the color and style. Bows are always your best choice, along with other funky hair clips. Don't forget the eyeliner! Girls can never have too much. If you're a guy, go moderate on the eyeliner and forget accessories. Leave your hair just everywere like it is in the morning. Mostly works great! If you have short emoish hair you may want to spike it or just mess with it after your morning shower.
